AAC Device Evaluations
What is AAC?
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) refers to various tools that can support the communication of someone with limitations to their speech and language. "Augmentative" refers to the use of AAC to supplement limited spoken communication. "Alternative" refers to the use of AAC as a primary form of communication when speech is not accessible. AAC can be as simple as gestures or pictures, or as advanced as speech-generating devices (like tablets that talk when you press buttons on the screen).
When is AAC useful?
- When there's a plateau in communication progress
- When an individual lacks communication skills
- If an individual can't be understood by others
- For individuals who are minimally speaking
How can AAC help?
- Help individuals advocate for themselves
- Allow them to express their wants and needs
- Provide alternative ways to communicate when their voice isn't accessible
How to obtain an evaluation for an AAC device:
To obtain an AAC device, you must first complete an evaluation with an approved Speech Language Pathologist. AZA United's speech therapy team is currently approved to provide these evaluations for Mercy Care members.
There are various types of AAC, including light-tech and speech-generating devices. Our evaluations determine what kind of AAC is needed to support the individual's communication.
Once approved, AZA United will also provide training for parents and caregivers on how to program and use the device.
